KOALA is a low-cost, stand-alone air quality sensor, developed at Queensland University of Technology with Thrive and built and commercialised in NZ by Mote.
In response to an increasing demand for information on air pollution, KOALA was developed to use solar energy to power advanced sensors that detect particle matter (PM) and carbon monoxide (CO). Data is sent wirelessly to the cloud, providing real-time air quality readings online.
Mote, a long-term client of Angle, asked us to rebrand the KOALA sensor. The existing logo didn’t reflect the quality of the product, so we redesigned the core mark and labelling.
In the new logo, a stylised koala becomes part of the name, which is an acronym for Knowing Our Ambient Local Air quality. The round head of the koala forms the letter ‘O’. The koala grasps an angled branch reflecting the fact that many of the sensors are pole-mounted. Distinctive ears transmit the data.
We designed two labels – one blue and the other white to distinguish between indoor and outdoor sensors.
Communities, councils, regulators, universities and consultants are the target audience. There are other air quality sensors on the market, but KOALA now stands proud as an Australian-designed icon.
